VLAN islands enable you to set up, for example, a guest VLAN that
restricts the guests in one facility from communicating with guests in another
facility.
It is recommended that you use the Policy VLAN Islands Configuration Wizard
for creating and configuring the VLAN islands and selecting the devices for each
island. To modify a VLAN island, use the VLAN island and Local VLAN tabs.
See Policy VLAN Islands for more information.
Instructions on:
In order to create local VLANs and use Policy VLAN Islands, you must
first enable the Policy VLAN Islands feature. To do this, select Edit from the
menu bar and check the Policy VLAN Islands Enabled checkbox. This creates a
Policy VLAN Islands folder and one Default VLAN Island on the left panel Network
Elements tab. Also, on the left panel VLANs tab, a Local VLANs folder is
created.
To disable Policy VLAN Islands, select Edit from the
menu bar and uncheck the Policy VLAN Islands Enabled checkbox. This removes
the Policy VLAN Islands folder, and the information within it, from the Network Elements tab.
It also removes the Local VLANs
folder from the VLANs tab, and any local VLANs you have created are
converted to global VLANs, using the corresponding VIDs from the VLAN
island.
Since Policy VLAN information is lost if you disable the Policy VLAN
Islands feature, if you plan to re-enable Policy VLAN Islands at a later
time, you may wish to save the .pmd file containing the VLAN islands and
local VLANs, so that you can import the Policy VLAN Islands information
rather than recreating it manually.
The Policy VLAN Islands Configuration Wizard is a series of windows
that leads you through the steps required to create and configure VLAN
islands.
Note: VLANs used in VLAN islands must be Local VLANs. If you want to use an
existing Global VLAN as a Local VLAN, change it on
the VLAN's General tab before starting
the wizard.
- On the Edit menu, select the Policy VLAN Islands
Enabled checkbox.
- In the left panel, select the Network Elements tab.
- Right-click the Policy VLAN Islands folder and select Policy VLAN
Islands Configuration Wizard from the menu.
- In the Island Base ID window, enter the
VLAN ID at which the
creation of VIDs for the local VLANs
will start. Click Next.
- In the Island Offset
window, enter the number of VLANs you want to allocate for each VLAN
island. Click Next.
- In the Local VLAN Naming
Convention window, choose a format for the island VLAN
names. Click Next.
- In the VLAN Islands window, add or remove VLAN Islands
as needed. (The Default Island that is created when you enable the
Policy VLAN Islands feature cannot be removed.) To add an island, enter
the name to the left of the Add button and click Add. To
remove an island, highlight it in the table and click Remove.
When you have finished adding/removing islands, click Next.
- In the Local VLANs
window, if you want to add any new local VLANs to use in VLAN islands,
click New to open the Create VLAN
window. Clicking OK on the Create VLAN window returns you to
the wizard. When you have finished adding local VLANs, click Next.
- In the Island Devices window, add the devices to the islands
as needed (see Add/Remove Devices window
for more information).
- Click Finish.
- You can add a description of a VLAN island on the island's
General tab.
Once you've created a VLAN island, you can change its characteristics
using the right-panel tabs as follows:
- To change a VLAN island name: Right-click the island in the left
panel Network Elements tab and select Rename.
- To change a VLAN island description: Use the island's
General tab.
- To edit the Local VLAN for an island: Use the View/Edit
Local VLAN button on the island's
VLANs tab.
- To edit a Local
VLAN ID: Use the Edit Local VLAN ID button on the island's
VLANs tab.
-
To change a VLAN Island Configuration (Base ID, Offset, Naming
Convention): Use the Policy VLAN Islands folder
General tab.
-
To add or remove devices from a VLAN island: Use the VLAN Islands
Add/Remove Devices window.
You cannot delete the Default Island.
- Open the Network Elements tab in the left panel and expand the
Policy VLAN Islands folder.
- Right-click the island you want to delete and select Delete.
- Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
