ROCHESTER, NH-- February 10, 2003--Enterasys Networks Inc. (NYSE: ETS), a leading worldwide provider of Business Driven NetworksTM for enterprise customers, today announced that Palm Beach Atlantic University is increasing network security, performance and control with Enterasys? User Personalized Network (UPN), a unique policy-based system that enables resource allocation at the point of network entry based on individual users and their roles. Palm Beach Atlantic, one of the fastest growing universities in Florida, selected the Enterasys solution in conjunction with Enterasys? strategic partner, Dell, to complete a $400,000 campus backbone replacement project. Along with the Enterasys infrastructure, the University also utilizes Dell OptiPlexTM desktops, LatitudeTM notebooks, PowerEdgeTM servers, and Dell/EMC Storage Area Networks (SANs).
?Our network had essentially remained untouched since its implementation in 1996. Over the last six years, we have steadily increased the number of computers we support. After all this growth, the performance was not just slow?it was non-existent,? said Roger Beasley, director of technology services for Palm Beach Atlantic University. ?Our goal for the backbone project was to build a network capable of supporting our rapid growth by not only delivering more performance, but also securing access to sensitive information and adding network management resources. Enterasys? User Personalized Network offered us tremendous functionality that other vendors couldn?t match.?
The new infrastructure includes Enterasys? X-Pedition switch-routers, Enterasys? Matrix switches and Enterasys? NetSight management software, providing Gigabit Ethernet performance for more than 3000 users. The network supports every major university function, including Internet access, e-mail, file and print servers, student records, administrative systems, library automation, the university?s card access systems, dial-up services and Voice over IP for remote sites. In addition, the new network also provides residence hall connectivity, where each dormitory room will come standard with a Dell OptiPlex desktop.
Now, with the increased performance, Palm Beach Atlantic has seen a sharp boost in network usage. Students, faculty and staff are taking advantage of the network?s speed and resources to increase productivity within their educational and administrative activities. In addition, by enabling Enterasys? UPN features, the University is able to effectively manage network resources and maintain secure controls over confidential data, such as administrative information and student records.
The University?s main challenge was to effectively manage ?mixed? locations, such as classrooms and common areas, where both students and faculty connect to the network. By employing the true dynamic nature unique to the User Personalized Network, Palm Beach Atlantic can apply 802.1X authentication and Enterasys? Active Edge features to create a flexible, mobile networking environment where authentication and security parameters are extended out to the network edge. The UPN infrastructure authenticates the user, identifies their role in the network and assigns access accordingly, regardless of where the user connects.
?Enterasys? User Personalized Network is a powerful tool that enables IT administrators to effectively manage network resources, delivering enhanced security, performance, and more efficient use of network bandwidth,? said Mads Lillelund, executive vice president, worldwide sales and marketing, Enterasys Networks. ?As one of the fastest growing universities in Florida, Palm Beach Atlantic is well-positioned for future growth and performance requirements with using Enterasys? UPN.?
